Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are chemicals that transform into pollutants when coal, oil, gas, wood, garbage and tobacco are burned. These common chemicals form small particles in the air, which can easily seep into cannabis plant food, soil and water. While PAHs don’t compromise cannabis growth, they are known carcinogens that can be extremely dangerous to humans upon exposure.

Regardless of how carefully you produce the product, you can never be sure that it’s free from PAHs until you test with an accredited laboratory like ACS.

We analyze extracts for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry GC/MS method. First, we weigh the sample. Then we safely quantify trace levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that may be polluting your product. Using this trusted protocol, we deliver precise results within 3-5 days.

How to submit a sample for PAH testing

The process to submit a sample of your flower or derivative product is easy. At ACS, we accept hemp products from all 50 states, including Puerto Rico as well as 16 countries worldwide. We pickup cannabis samples from licensed MMTCs in the state of Florida. Plus, if you live in Florida, you can schedule our courier service from anywhere in the state. Health concerns with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

PAHs contain toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic properties that can cause disease and cancer at high levels of exposure. If your customers accidentally inhale or apply PAHs to the body, they can also experience severe skin and eye irritation. PAHs are readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, so you need to be sure that your product is clean. Verified testing will guarantee that your hemp or cannabis products are safe to ingest.

PAH testing compliance and regulation

Currently, there are no federal or Florida state standards related to PAH testing. However, by law, all consumable products–regardless of specific requirements–must be safe to ingest.
